Topics Covered

Basic operation: saw parts, safe handling, starting & stopping, fueling, potential dangers, safety features, PPE

Maintenance: regular checks, winter operation, chain & bar, carburetor

Safety Considerations: OH&S, emergency plan, communications, equipment, fire, wildlife

Limbing and bucking: safety, compression & tension, techniques

Basic falling: terminology, tools, falling a tree, notches and backcuts

Special situations: various topics, including spring poles, uprooted trees, heavy leaners, oversized trees, tied trees & snags.

Course Outline

The course will consist of a combination of lecture, demonstration and practical. The majority of the course will be hands-on training at your facility or chosen location.

The Woodland Trainer Association (WTA) in co-operation with chainsaw and other manufacturers, vegetation management companies and several exploration companies has developed this program in response to needs identified by government agencies and industry associations. The Department of Labour – Occupational Health and Safety Division, Alberta Forest Products Association, Parks Canada, private and public agencies, and equipment suppliers and trainers contributed to the development and evolution of the program.

Our objective is to develop proficient chainsaw operators who demonstrate a positive attitude toward safety, environmental stewardship, and professional care and diligence in their work. The program emphasizes instructional excellence, high standards of proficiency, safe work practices, modern and well-maintained equipment, personal fitness and, above all, adherence to local Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations pertaining to the chainsaw professions.

5. Knowing your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

6. Handle the Chainsaw safely.

Certification

Upon completion of this 8 Hour training course, students will be issued a Woodland Trainers Association certificate from our individual instructors showing completion of training.
